Davis Islands

This community exists on manmade islands which were in turn built on natural islands. Dredging it up from Hillsborough Bay was undertaken by DP Davis, who described it as the “Eighth Wonder of the World.” In 1924, he announced the development would be known as Davis Islands, and its 55-acre park would be Marjorie Park in honor of his wife, who had died two years earlier. The island was, and is, known for its lavish Mediterranean buildings and commanding views. Alas, Davis would not live to see the full flush of his achievement, as he died at sea under mysterious circumstances during a 1926 transatlantic voyage (or did he?)
