Gray Gables
Establishing Tampa as the crown jewel of Florida’s west coast took some hustle. Early investors enthusiastically brought in colleagues from around the country to ensure the city’s success. A September 1924 Tampa Daily Times headline reported: “Capitalists from North Invest Here: Gray Gables to be High-Class Subdivision.” WH Gunlocke of New York and Frank Stuart of Tennessee created the neighborhood, giving life to their vision of curving parkways encircling a center rectangle planted with queen palms and flowering shrubs and illuminated by ornamental streetlights. The ‘e’ at the end of Gunlock inexplicably fell off in 1928!
