Palma Ceia

The first plat for this neighborhood dates back to 1903 and was filed under the name “Madrid.” The subdivision was owned by attorney Thomas Palmer. As the story goes, Angel Cuesta of Cuesta Rey Cigars shared a map of Havana when he and Palmer were discussing the subdivision. Palmer was charmed by the street names of its old section and followed suit. Four years later, Palmer joined forces with developer James Taylor, who expanded Madrid and continued the Cuban street-naming convention. By 1910, Palmer had renamed the project Palma Ceia– partly in tribute to his own last name and partly because of the name’s exotic Spanish sound.
