Sunset Park

In 1916, the sparse community of Sunset Park had a stretch of beach, aspirations of growing up to be like its genteel neighbor, Beach Park, and little else. But all that changed as the land boom hit its peak in 1923-1924. Property that had once sold for $50 an acre had skyrocketed to $10,000 an acre, and the Sunset Park Company, led by developer Charles Glover, was busily building magnificent homes to adorn the neighborhood’s beautiful streets, many of which are still there. Glover was married to a poet, Alma, whose influence is seen in Sunset Park’s street names: Longfellow, Keats, Dickins, Dante and Tennyson, among others.
